Building a Dome Greenhouse

Future Home of My Greenhouse Dome - April 16, 2012
I am currently in the process of preparing the construction site for my new geodesic dome greenhouse.  Living at 8,100 feet, in the high desert of Colorado, any kind of successful organic farming or gardening will be dependent on the establishment of greenhouse grow beds.

Why did I choose a geodesic greenhouse?  Geodesic domes are incredibly strong, space-efficient, economical, beautiful structures.  Because I am building this dome by myself, I selected dome plans that will enable me to have my first greenhouse finished within a month.  I will be sharing the construction process along with the establishment of my organic gardens and aquaponics system.

As a proponent of permaculture, all of my decisions and actions will be guided by these ecological principles for sustainable living.  My intention is to use as many local, natural, and recycled or repurposed materials as possible (in the creation of this organic space).  It is also my deep desire to use this grow dome as a living, breathing oasis of learning.

  2. As a city apartment dweller with no more than a struggling window herb garden, I plan to take mountains of vicarious pleasure in your greenhouse journey. Thank you for sharing it with us.

    1. We'll have to get you hooked up with an apartment-sized aquaponic gardening system. No more struggling herbs when you use an aquarium in conjunction with your food production. An inexpensive solution for vibrant, thriving greens. Very happy you are sharing my journey.

  3. Good luck with the dome building. I have just finished constructing the frame on my own dome here in Japan. It sounded like you were going with panel construction, I went with struts cut to angles provided by the acidome website. Checked them a little on sketch up, then spent two days cutting joints. If this comment doesn't lead to my blog a search for stevesnewsbook should find it. May be a source of encouragement to see someone else digging in the mud.

    2. I guess my dome is pretty small potatoes, but nevertheless looking forward need not be your destiny no longer, the blob is pretty much up and running. My daughter is busy nursing small plants into long trousers to take their places in the sun. I envy you the availability of the polycarbonate. I have a load of old windows from demolition sites I will eventually cut to fit, but for now we are skimping along with vinyl. So far, aside from the whole dome thing my favourite bit has been seeing the windows open and close morning and evening. The blog is at http://www.stevesnewsbook.blogspot.jp/ good luck with yours.
